Under the Inquisition. The Marquis Della Porta, venetian aristocrat, spend the summer in his villa on the heights of Venice with a courtesan Veronica Stampa. His waiter Paolo is in love with her. The courtesan is attracted to Jacopo, the secretary of Della Porta, a severe young man who would without cess remind the marquis his homework : Venice is his wife ; but Veronica would to seduce him. The marquis is very hurt. The messages sent with the intermediary of Paolo are without replies. Betrayed by Jacopo, he would be saved by Veronica by the evil judgement of the Inquisition.
